The Minnesota Vikings hardly got to know Hank Baskett, one of the top-rated undrafted rookies in camp last weekend. After five practices with the team, Baskett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for wide receiver Billy McMullen.
"I'm pleased to have Billy as an addition to our wide receivers," said Vikings head coach Brad Childress. "Billy knows our style and understands in advance what's expected of him."
New Mexico's leading receiver in each of the past two seasons, the 23-year-old Baskett (6-4, 220) was an All-Mountain West selection as a senior, posting 67 receptions for 1,071 yards and nine touchdowns. Also a track standout, Baskett was a three-time All-Mountain West selection in the outdoor high jump and was the conference champion in the event as a junior.
The Clovis, NM, native earned all-state honors as a receiver and a punter in high school.
McMullen, now the Vikings' property, has a similar build to Baskett, as McMullen goes 6-4, 215. In three NFL seasons, he played in 29 games with the Eagles, making 22 catches, including one touchdown in 2005, for 294 yards.
McMullen was a third-round draft choice of the Eagles in 2003 out of Virginia. Last year, he had a career-high 18 receptions and 268 yards. His touchdown reception came from current Viking Mike McMahon, and McMullen's offensive coordinator in Philadelphia was Childress.
* The Vikings also released safety Laroni Gallishaw on Thursday. Gallishaw was an undrafted rookie last year that made the team's 53-man roster as a cornerback. He had been playing safety in the Vikings' April and May minicamps.
