More Training Camp Details Emerge

While the Minnesota Vikings training camp schedule hasn't been finalized in detail quite yet (that's expected to come in a few weeks), there are more details coming forward than the start and stop dates given out earlier this week.

As reported earlier this week, head coach Brad Childress said rookies and select veterans will report to Minnesota State, Mankato on July 27. The full team will start practicing on July 30, and the Vikings are expected to have at least one practice against the Kansas City Chiefs under the lights on the evening of Aug. 4. The team will break camp on Aug. 17.

Now it is expected that the Vikings will kick off the festivities surrounding training camp with a street party in downtown Mankato at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 29 with the full team starting practice the following day. Open practices are expected to begin on Aug. 1 and continue through Aug. 3 before the practice against the Chiefs on Aug. 4.

Saturday, Aug. 5 is "Season Ticket Owner Day" with open practices, while Sunday, Aug. 6 is "Fan Club Day" with open practices. The open practices will continue throughout the following week, with Aug. 10 "3-A-Day Dairy Kids Day" with a youth football clinic at noon at Blakeslee Stadium. Aug. 11 is another "Season Ticket Owner Day," and Aug. 12 is "Cheerleader Day" with a cheerleader clinic at noon.

The practices on Sunday, Aug. 13 are closed to the public in preparation for the Aug. 14 preseason opener at the Metrodome against Randy Moss and the Oakland Raiders.

Players are off on Aug. 15, but open practices resume on Wednesday, Aug. 16, and Aug. 17 is "Fan Appreciation Day" as the team has its last practice of training camp in Mankato.

More details will emerge in the coming weeks, but fans with further questions can call the Vikings at 952-828-6500 with additional questions.

This 41st year of training camp in Mankato could be the last. The team could receive bids from other cities to host camp in future years.
