Offord Signs, McKinnie On Hold

The Vikings continued to sign their rookie draftees Tuesday, as Willie Offord agreed to a three-year deal.

The Vikings continued to plow ahead with the signing of their rookies, continuing almost on cue by signing Willie Offord to a three-year contract.

While full contract terms were not disclosed, the deal is for three years and includes a signing bonus of $535,000. Offord is expected to compete immediately for a starting d-back position in camp.

VU has been told the Vikings continue to make progress with LB Raonall Smith and that a signing may come as early as tomorrow. Talks with Bryant McKinnie, however, haven't progressed to the point where either side is expressing any excitement about getting a deal done.

* The Houston Texans aren't making any friends in the NFL. When the team signed WR Jabar Gafney Tuesday, his seven-year deal included a second-round record $2.15 million signing bonus. Because of this, the bar may be raised for all comparable picks and their agents when it comes to negotiating future contracts. While the deal essentially is the same as many other rookie contracts in terms of total money, the up-front element is what is going to cause waves around the league, since the contract effectively voids after four years if he meets nominal playing incentives. Let the complaining begin.
* Attorneys for Kelci Stringer plan to depose NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue for the family's pending lawsuit and, depending on what Tagliabue tells the attorneys during his deposition, the NFL could be included on the list of defendants in the case.
* As of this morning, only nine first-round rounders were signed -- up six from 24 hours previously -- but, after the top three picks of the first round, none of the remaining top 10 picks have signed -- leaving some to speculate which team will blink first and break the logjam.
