Competition to Hire a DC

While the Vikings evaluate some of the top college talent at the Senior Bowl, the process of picking a new defensive coordinator has Brad Childress looking over his shoulder, since the Raiders and Cowboys are likely in the same sort of hunt for outside candidates.

The Vikings' shopping list for a defensive coordinator lost a name Wednesday when the Eagles promoted Sean McDermott from safeties coach to linebackers coach – locking him down for the 2007 season. McDermott moves into the position vacated by Steve Spagnuolo, who became the Giants defensive coordinator Monday.

While the Vikings' coaching staff is in Mobile for the Senior Bowl practices, the sense of urgency to hire a new defensive coordinator has been ratcheted up a couple of notches. With the Raiders' hiring of Lane Kiffin and the retirement of Bill Parcells from the Cowboys, at least two other teams are looking to fill coaching vacancies and the competition is getting more fierce by the day.

Other names that have surfaced are Nebraska defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove and current Vikings coaches Karl Dunbar (defensive line) and Fred Pagac (linebackers).

THURSDAY NOTES
* The Brown have scheduled an interview with former Vikings offensive coordinator Steve Loney for their vacant offensive line coaching position.
* Aside from his coordinators, Mike Tomlin of the Steelers is expected to keep almost all of the coaches that were on Bill Cowher's staff. Only QB coach Mark Whipple and secondary coach Darren Perry aren't expected back. Tomlin has tabbed former NFL QB Ken Anderson as his new QB coach.
