Vikings Sign Biekert

Just hours after starting talks with Greg Biekert, VU has learned the Vikings have signed the former Raider linebacker.

Sunday word began filtering through Winter Park that Greg Biekert had been granted his release from the Oakland Raiders and it was hoped that his relationship with defensive coordinator Willie Shaw would be a help to the Vikings.

As it turned out, it was. The Vikings signed Biekert this morning to what VU has been told is a three year, $3.5 million contract with a $1 million signing bonus.

The other team involved in trying to sign Biekert was NFC North rival Detroit, who was apparently willing to offer close to $2 million for a one-year deal -- more money than the Vikings, but not the prospect of getting into the postseason that the Vikes can offer.

The team won't officially announce the signing until later today because to add Biekert to the roster, a player will have to be released and the Vikings are still deciding who the player will be that is let go.
