Brien Keeps Job, 4 Named to Practice Squad

Upon further review, Mike Tice has opted to keep Doug Brien -- releasing Tim Seder to make room for new MLB Greg Biekert on the 53-man roster.

Sometimes auditions blow coaches away. Other times, it's like the football version of "Waiting for Guffman."

So it was Tuesday at Winter Park, as four kickers, including former Cowboy Tim Seder, claimed by the Vikings off waivers, came to Winter Park for a kicking tryout.

In the end, coach Mike Tice opted to stay with Doug Brien. Late this afternoon, the Vikings announced the official signing of LB Greg Biekert and, to make room for him on the 53-man roster, the team released Seder.

With Brien's job secure...for now...the Vikings moved on to other business, signing four players to the team's practice squad. They include former Vikings RB Jeremy Allen, CB Carey Scott and OT Chad Beasley. A fourth signee -- CB James Rooths -- was added to the practice squad.

Rooths, a first-year pro from Shepherd College in West Virginia, was seen as a player who had an outside chance of making the New York Jets roster but was released in favor of veteran defensive backs.

The signing of Rooths leaves just one more spot open on the practice squad and many believe that may end up going to guard Ed Ta'amu, who Tice said would likely need some seasoning before he would develop into a potential NFL offensive lineman. Ta'amu, who was released when the team claimed Seder off of waivers, was expected to clear waivers at 3 p.m. CDT today and then could be eligible to be re-signed.

If the Vikings opt to sign Ta'amu to the practice squad, that will keep May phenom Kyries Hebert off the roster completely. A player who some theorized could be a starter this year after an impressive minicamp, has fallen off the roster completely and now looks like he won't be on the practice squad, either.
