Shuffling Goes With Seder Release

Tight end Matt Cercone had to be exposed to the waiver wire Tuesday because of NFL rules regarding the claim to kicker Tim Seder.

The Vikings wanted to put some pressure on Doug Brien, so the team made a waiver claim on Dallas kicker Tim Seder Monday.

But in the process, the Vikings may have potentially clouded their future with TE Matt Cercone.

In order to add Greg Biekert to the roster, the Vikings needed to release a player. Had they kept Seder, they could have cut Brien. But, by keeping Brien, the team had to make a tough decision -- an expected one-day release of Cercone.

Under NFL rules, a player claimed off of waivers must stay with a team at least 48 hours. Because Seder was picked up Monday, he officially needs to stay on the roster until today. For that reason, Cercone had to be cut for the Vikings to add Biekert.

While it isn't expected that another team will make a waiver claim on Cercone, the Vikings set themselves up to potentially lose their young tight end because of a decision at kicker that didn't pan out. Cercone is expected to clear waivers and, if he does, the Vikes will re-sign him this afternoon.

* As expected, once he cleared waivers Tuesday, Ed Ta'amu, who was cut when Seder was claimed Monday, was re-signed to the practice squad to fill out the Vikings five-man contingent.
* The Bears are currently a 4-1/2 point favorite over the Vikings for Sunday's game.
