Vikes Sign Thigpen

The Vikings have signed a draft pick early -- getting seventh-round QB Tyler Thigpen inked and ready to start working. While terms were undisclosed, Thigpen is ready to hit the ground running in what is going to shape into a battle between him and Drew Henson for a spot on the active roster.

The Vikings have signed seventh-round quarterback Tyler Thigpen – making him the first of eight Vikings draft picks to sign.

Thigpen, who became the first player from the Big South Conference to be drafted to the NFL, was pleased to see a deal get done so early in the post-draft process.

"It's a great relief to have the contract done and a weight off my shoulders," Thigpen said in a statement from the Vikings. "Playing in the NFL some day is something every kid thinks about when they first pick up a football. It's like a dream come true to actually be in the NFL now and I look forward to getting to work and helping this team."

Thigpen is expected to battle practice squad QB Drew Henson for the third quarterback spot on the Vikings roster behind Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger.

While the contract numbers for Thigpen weren't available Friday evening, last year's player selected in that spot received a three-year deal. That player was defensive back Cortland Finnegan, who received base salaries of $275,000, $360,000, and $445,000 with a signing bonus of $42,875, according to a league source.

* From the "What the…?" Department comes this: Just when you thought you could start hating Moss, he shows up for the Patriots' voluntary (repeat voluntary) workout program.
* From the "All Randy, All the Time" Department comes this: Ben Watson, a talented tight end for the Patriots, has received a big share of media attention in recent days. Why? He wears No. 84. The Boston media is speculating that Moss wants his number back. Apparently Watson is willing to give it up…for a price.
* Daunte Culpepper took part in minimal action at Dolphins minicamp. Pepp took part in some of the drills, but wasn't asked to step up in any capacity – partly to cover the team's butt in the event that he is released after a trade is reached with the Chiefs to acquire Trent Green. In the meantime, the Cleo Lemon era continues.
