Winfield a No-Show at OTAs

CB Antoine Winfield is not expected to be at the Vikings organized team activity sessions this week -- the second time he has missed OTA workouts.

Coaches typically like to see 100 percent compliance with the offseason organized team activities (OTA) that go on during the spring and early summer. While technically not mandatory, most players attend these sessions.

Antoine Winfield was absent from the first round of OTAs in the offseason and isn't expected for this week's sessions, which run from today through Friday.

No reason has been specified why Winfield won't be part of the workouts.

"I really don't know," head coach Brad Childress said when asked what is going with Winfield's situation. " You'd have to ask him that. He hasn't been here in the offseason program, and that's guys' prerogative. As I mentioned to you, this is the time of year when you get a chance to enhance the foundation that you laid last year and see what we've added. I think it's an important time to spend time with your teammates and coaches. Our players know how important this time of year is. When you've had 96 percent of your guys here throughout the course of the offseason program, I need to focus on the guys that are here working hard."

Childress said that "to his knowledge" Winfield hasn't asked for a trade.

Defensive end Erasmus James was in attendance but did not practice while he continues to heal from surgery to repair a torn ACL, and guard Steve Hutchinson was attending a charity golf event on Tuesday instead of Vikings practice.

Safety Mike Doss participated despite indications from the Vikings last week that he might not be ready.

"He's done a good job with his rehab and he wants to get out there and vie for that position," Childress said of Doss. "I'd say just about where he needs to be. He's another guy that you have to keep your eye on with those guys that had those knee surgeries."
