Kluwe has been an early-season bright spot

We don’t mean to put the VU jinx on him, but punter Chris Kluwe has been in a zone since the regular season started.  He is currently ranked third in the NFL in gross punting (46.7).  The Vikings rank tied for ninth in net punting average (40.0).

Kluwe has had opportunities in virtually all phases of the game for a punter, and he has excelled so far.  He’s done a nice job of pinning defenders inside the 20 when that’s what’s been called for, and he’s been able to really drive the ball in situations where he can let it rip.

Despite being only 25-years-old, Kluwe is beginning to bring the feel of being a veteran punter.

Vikings fortunate to be so deep at safety

Both starting safeties for the Vikings have missed practice time this week.  The team’s defense was on the field for 81 plays in last Sunday’s overtime loss to the Detroit Lions, leading to dehydration and cramping for both Darren Sharper and Dwight Smith.

Sharper needed IV treatment during the game and Smith’s hamstring has limited him much of this week.  Teammates remain optimistic that both can and will still play this week, but if they cannot or are somewhat limited, the Vikings are still covered with proven veterans Mike Doss and Tank Williams in reserve.

Doss has practiced this week after nursing calf injury and being inactive for the team’s first two regular-season games.  He will likely be up for Sunday’s game at Kansas City.

Doss and Williams have combined for 99 NFL starts, so the team will not be without experience if they need help at safety.
