The Vikings have finally conquered a two-game winning streak, but that's nothing compared to the streak Matt Birk has been on with his off-the-field projects. The Vikings' Pro Bowl center has been named the Vikings Man of the Year for the sixth consecutive year.
Birk will be recognized for the honor as he hosts a pizza party Tuesday at Winter Park for the SCJDC school in Jordan, Minn., the winning school of the Vikings/Star Tribune Gridiron Geography program. The school was chosen through a drawing of classrooms participating in the statewide program. Ms. Carrie Moga's classroom will receive the honor.
Birk was selected the team's Man of the Year by Brad Madson, the Vikings' executive director of community relations/youth football. Since joining the Vikings in 1998, Birk has been a cornerstone in the Vikings community efforts and in 2002 established his own HIKE Foundation, which has raised more than $450,000 to date. The funds have been used for interactive programming and education assistance.
Birk's HIKE Foundation and other Vikings' community efforts will be featured in a coming issue of Viking Update The Magazine.
Birk is also the team spokesperson for the United Way and "has made countless school and children's hospital visits and generously supports his teammates' community initiatives as well," according to a team release.
