Second Safety In Vikings' Sites

The Vikings appear to have two safeties at the top of their free-agent board, according to what league sources have told's Adam Caplan. Find out who they are inside! Free agency starts on at 11 p.m. Central on Thursday, and the Vikings have said they might be more aggressive this year.

The Minnesota Vikings are expected to be one of several teams that show an interest in New York Giants safety Gibril Wilson, according to what a league source told's Adam Caplan. After four years with the Giants, Wilson will hit the free-agent market if the Giants don't get him signed to an extension.

Among the other teams expected to show interest in Wilson are the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans, the source said.

Wilson is known as one of the better run-defending safeties in the game but he struggles a bit in pass coverage, according to Caplan.

Last year, the 6-foot-4, 209-pounder started all 13 games in which he played, registering 92 tackles and four interceptions for the Super Bowl champions during the regular season. In 2006, he started 15 games in which he played and registered 100 tackles and two interceptions.

In 2005, he started 16 games and had 112 tackles and two interceptions, and as a rookie he began his professional career with seven starts in eight games, putting up 56 tackles and three interceptions.

Wilson is known as good at playing the run and has usually been one of the top tackling safeties around the league, but he's a bit inconsistent in coverage, according to Caplan. But Caplan also points out that the safety position is thin in free agency this year and the Vikings likely won't be alone with their interest of Wilson.

Minnesota released starting safety Dwight Smith recently, leaving their own roster very thin at the position. Darren Sharper remains one of the starters after going to the Pro Bowl in February, but Mike Doss and Tank Williams are both scheduled to become free agents on Friday. Doss isn't expected to re-sign with the Vikings, his agent Drew Rosenhaus said and head coach Brad Childress confirmed.

The status if Williams isn't known. Childress said the Vikings would be meeting with all of their own free agents at the NFL Scouting Combine, which started Thursday and runs through today.

On Saturday, reported that the Vikings are expected to target Bengals safety Madeiu Williams as free-agent target, according to a Bengals source. On Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine, we were told that former Bengals and current Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier had a big part in drafting Williams in 2004, the safety's first season in the league and Frazier's second and last season as coordinator of the Bengals.

Madeiu Williams is considered athletic, but he has had a string of injuries that have kept him in and out of the starting lineup.

Free agency officially begins at 11 p.m. Central on Thursday evening.
