Benny Sapp entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie out of Northern Iowa, but the cornerback could find at least one more year of NFL employment after signing a one-year contract with the Vikings. The deal is worth $705,000, according to ESPN.com, which is $100,000 more than the veteran minimum for a fifth-year player.
In four years (56 regular-season games) with the Chiefs, the 5-foot-9, 190-pound Sapp made six starts and had 103 tackles and two interceptions.
With the Vikings, he likely will compete for a roster spot with younger cornerback Charles Gordon and any other rookies the Vikings may add to the mix during draft weekend or immediately following.
Cornerback was one of the positions the Vikings investigated often during the year last season, bringing numerous players in for visits. They ended up signing only Dee McCann to the practice squad during the season last year, and McCann still remains with the team looking for a larger role in 2008.
Cedric Griffin and Antoine Winfield are expected to be the starters once again, with 2007 third-round draft choice Marcus McCauley playing in the nickel defense. Ronyell Whitaker, who remains unsigned, and Charles Gordon split time as dime defenders.
This year, safety Madieu Williams also offers the versatility to cover the slot receiver.
