Quick Fantasy Football Thoughts

July means the start of fantasy football rankings. We offer up some quick thoughts at multiple positions.

If you've visited a book store or even a grocery store newsstand, it's been hard to miss the fantasy football magazines. It has become something of a national obsession in recent years and everyone is trying to cash in on the money available.

With that in mind, Viking Update staffers are in the early stages of creating their own fantasy football rankings. Here is our first look at who will be somebody this year in the realm of fantasy football.

The position has been the private domain of Peyton Manning for years at the top spot, but he isn't the king anymore. That distinction now goes to New England's Tom Brady. While they will still be the top two guys off the board, the crop of other starting QBs isn't too shabby either.

1. Tom Brady
2. Peyton Manning
3. Tony Romo
4. Drew Brees
5. Carson Palmer
6. Ben Rothlisberger
7. Donovan McNabb
8. Derek Anderson
9. Marc Bulger
10. Eli Manning
* -- If he comes back, Brett Favre also ends up on the top 10 list.

The big question here is who is going to be the top pick in the draft – LaDainian Tomlinson or Adrian Peterson? Regardless of who goes first, the other will likely go second. That said, beyond the top two picks, there isn't a huge difference between No. 3 and No. 10, making running back a tougher position to rank now that it was a year ago at this time when first-round picks were routine busts.

1. LaDainian Tomlinson
2. Adrian Peterson
3. Joseph Addai
4. Steven Jackson
5. Brian Westbrook
6. Marion Barber
7. Clinton Portis
8. Larry Johnson
9. Frank Gore
10. Marshawn Lynch

Old guys rule the roost once again, as veterans Randy Moss and Terrell Owens return to the top of the draft board. With both entrenched as the go-to guys on pass-happy teams, they're going to be potential first-rounders for the first time in years.

1. Randy Moss
2. Terrell Owens
3. Reggie Wayne
4. Braylon Edwards
5. Steve Smith
6. Larry Fitzgerald
7. T.J. Houshmandzadeh
8. Andre Johnson
9. Marques Colston
10. Torry Holt

For a long time, this was the exclusive domain of Antonio Gates. But, with so many teams adding tight ends in the first round in recent years, the depth pool at TE has gotten significantly better and made it a scenario in which there are a half-dozen or more must-play TEs available.

1. Antonio Gates
2. Jason Witten
3. Kellen Winslow
4. Tony Gonzalez
5. Chris Cooley
6. Dallas Clark
7. Jeremy Shockey
8. Vernon Davis
9. Heath Miller
10. Todd Heap

In two weeks, training camps will begin and the real world of football with get underway. But for now, fantasy owners can start making their lists and checking them twice. You know the season is getting closer when fantasy owners start getting the itch.
