Gus Frerotte wasn't pleased with Brad Childress' decision to return to Tarvaris Jackson as the starter, but Childress also said he wouldn't want a quarterback who just accepts the decision without a competitive fire.
will start at quarterback for a second consecutive game on Sunday when the Vikings play host to the Atlanta Falcons. Jackson, benched after the Vikings started 0-2, has played very well since replacing Gus Frerotte
late in the first half on Dec. 7 at Detroit. Jackson has completed 19 of 27 passes, thrown five touchdowns with no interceptions, and posted an impressive 141.7 passer rating.
Jackson helped the Vikings rally for a victory over the Lions and then threw a career-high four touchdown passes in a 35-14 victory last Sunday at Arizona.
Frerotte said Thursday he is now 100 percent, but coach Brad Childress has decided to stick with the hot hand.
"That takes nothing away from Gus," Childress said. "It's more a product of what Tarvaris has done with the ball in his hand. ... There are those factors. I'm evaluating the medical part of it. And I'm getting my sense of where they're at and the hot hand. Just making a decision. I've got to make a decision one way or the other."
Childress declined to say whether Jackson is his starter for Sunday's game against Atlanta only or for the rest of the season. "I'm staying in the now," he said.
Frerotte, who went 8-3 as the starter, clearly is not happy with the decision.
"It's up to Coach," he said. "Obviously I'm not happy about it. I mean, anybody that's competitive wants to be the guy that's out there. I put a lot of hard work and a lot of effort into this. But it's Coach's decision, and I'll be out there to help this team no matter what."
DE Jared Allen did not practice Wednesday or Thursday because of a sprained MCL in his left knee. This is no cause for concern. Allen also missed practice last Wednesday and Thursday because of the injury but played last Sunday at Arizona while wearing a brace and had two sacks.
WR Bernard Berrian sat out Thursday's practice but it was not listed as injury related. Late in the season, the Vikings wanted to get Berrian a rest.
QB Gus Frerotte was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday because of a broken bone in his back that kept him out of last Sunday's game in Arizona.
RT Artis Hicks did not practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday because of a partially torn right triceps that has kept him out of two of the past three games. Ryan Cook has started in Hicks' place. Hicks might be able to return this year but he likely is going to need surgery when the season is finished.
RB Adrian Peterson was added to the injury report because of an ankle injury that limited him Wednesday and Thursday. There is no concern about Peterson's status for Sunday's game.
WR/KR Darius Reynaud did not practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday. He missed the Arizona game because of a toe injury suffered the previous week at Detroit.
DE Brian Robison was limited Wednesday and Thursday because of a knee injury. Robison played Sunday, 12 days after having arthroscopic surgery to repair the injury.
DT Pat Williams is expected to miss at least a month because of a broken right scapula.
