Vikes Eyeing Bill Tobin?

Vikings owner Red McCombs sees this year's draft as a make-or-break proposition and, to that end, is exploring the option of hiring a personnel man to have final say of talent evaluation. One name VU is hearing is long-time personnel guru Bill Tobin.

Red McCombs understands the ramifications of this off-season. While most fans assume the Vikings are going to rebuild the missing pieces to their puzzle through the free agency, McCombs is much more concerned about building through the draft.

Disappointed with recent drafts that have yielded little beyond the first round, VU has been told that McCombs is in the process of hiring a personnel man to provide final authority on making the crucial draft choices that could shape the short-term future of the franchise.

One name that has surfaced is Bill Tobin, who spent many years with the Chicago Bears before going on to Indianapolis and, for the last two years, Detroit. Tobin brings a wealth of experience and connections to college talent scouts that would be invaluable.

McCombs has said he expects to get two immediate starters from the draft and four players who can make significant contributions. A man like Tobin would be ideal to make the tough decisions the Vikings will have to make with the seventh overall pick in the first round and what is expected to be the 40th overall pick in the second round.

* Those of us at VU (choke) would like to send our condolences (chortle) to the fans of the Green Bay Packers (snicker), who lost their first home playoff game in franchise history last night (ha-ha) to the Atlanta Falcons. Congratulations on a good season and enjoy watching the rest of the playoffs on TV like everyone else.
* As expected, QB coach Alex Wood was told his position has been eliminated and will become part of the job of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.
* Mike Tice and his assistants will be in San Francisco this week scouting the East-West Shrine Game and in Mobile, Ala. next week to scout the Senior Bowl.
