The Vikings announced today the release of CB Charles Gordon.
Gordon was placed on injured reserve last year after suffering a gruesome ankle injury against the Green Bay Packers while returning a punt. It's unclear at this point if Gordon was given an injury settlement, but he failed a physical, according to the team's web site. He had not participated in offseason practices earlier this spring and summer while he continued his recovery.
If healthy, Gordon was expected to compete for the nickel back role with Benny Sapp (who took over for Gordon last year after his injury), free-agent signee Karl Paymah and third-round draft pick Asher Allen.
The Vikings still need to release one more player in order to sign both of their remaining two unsigned draft picks, second-round offensive tackle Phil Loadholt and first-round wide receiver Percy Harvin. Gordon's release could be another sign that Loadholt's signing is close. They would need to release another player if they signed Brett Favre too.
NFL rosters are limited to a maximum of 80 players at the start of training camp.
Last year, Gordon played in nine games, starting two in the nickel defense, before his ankle injury ended his season on Nov. 9. He won a spot in the nickel defense early in the season and had 16 tackles, one interception, two tackles for a loss, three passes defensed, a QB hurry and a forced fumble. He also returned 15 punts for 66 yards and two kickoffs for 61 yards and added five tackles on special teams.
Gordon originally signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent following the 2006 NFL Draft. He re-signed a one-year deal for 2009 in hopes of making his comeback.
In 2007, he played in all 16 games, starting three of them as an extra defensive back, and registered 36 tackles, five passes defensed and one interception. He also contributed 15 special teams tackles, tying for second on the team, and one kickoff return for 27 yards.
He started his career with the Vikings on the practice squad for the first eight games of the 2006 season before being promoted to the 53-man roster Nov. 7. He played in the final eight games, including a start at cornerback in the season finale vs. St. Louis. He finished his rookie season with eight tackles (seven solo), one tackle for a loss and one forced fumble.
