Bobby Wade may have run the best decoy route of his career.
At a time when Vikings coach Brad Childress was getting hammered for pursuing Brett Favre and failing to land him, and thereby letting his concerns about his current quarterback crew be exposed, Wade quickly turned talked away from landing one Pro Bowl quarterback to calling out another one in the division.
The background: Wade appeared on KFAN radio (listen here) on Wednesday morning and seemed determined to get out a story about new Bears quarterback Jay Cutler that quickly gained legs around the Internet and on talk radio in Minneapolis and Chicago.
"He's a good player. Obviously, it's a much different environment going from Denver to playing in Chicago. Chicago is a tough club to play for," Wade said.
"I don't want to get him in trouble, but it wasn't what they expected. Pretty much (Urlacher) said Jay Cutler was a pussy, for the most part. … We've got to have a little bit of controversy."
Besides distracting some in the media away from the Favre letdown, Wade's comments also start a controversy in Chicago. Just like Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels may have felt jilted by a few of their teammates campaigning for Favre to join the Vikings, Wade's comments could put a sliver (or more) of doubt in Cutler's mind about how his teammates feel about him.
Defensive tackle Tommie Harris shot back via his Twitter page, denying Urlacher said that about Cutler.
"lac didn't say that u guys are full of it and tell bobby Wade will see about that," Harris tweeted.
Urlacher also responded to the Chicago Tribune.
"Oh please. I don't think I would ever say that about one of my teammates," Urlacher told the Tribune. "Look, Bobby Wade's a friend of mine. He's trying to get things going before training camp. That's just Bobby being Bobby. I'm pretty sure Jay knows I wouldn't say that about him."
Wade, a former Chicago Bear, is a media-friendly and media-savvy player and it seems unlikely he would make those comments without realizing the ramifications, both good and bad.
"To tell you the truth, I think it's just stupid," Urlacher said. "I don't really care. I think Jay knows me well enough to know I wouldn't say that. The radio stations that talk about it? I really don't (care) what they said. They are the (wimps)."
"I have no problem with Jay. I think we're all excited about Jay. That's why we made the trade. He's obviously one of the best quarterbacks in the league. I think we have a better chance to win the Super Bowl with him at quarterback," Urlacher said.
"Again, I'm pretty sure Jay knows I wouldn't say that about him. It seems like something always happens before training camp, I guess. But it doesn't bother me. I've definitely had a lot worse things happen before training camp."
Now the Vikings have something else to talk about other than post-mortem Favre era that never was, attention was turned the Bears, and a rivalry between last year's two best teams in the division just got a little better.
