Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and quarterback Brett Favre are among the nominees for the FedEx Ground and Air players of the year, respectively.
Favre joins Saints QB Drew Brees and Colts QB Peyton Manning as the nominees for the air award.
Peterson, who won the ground award last year, joins Titans RB Chris Johnson and Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew as nominees for the ground award.
Fans can vote for one player in each category on NFL.com/FedEx until Jan. 29 at 5 p.m. Central. The winners are announced on Feb. 3 during the week leading up to Super XLIV in South Florida. This year prior to Super Bowl, FedEx will donate an additional $25,000 to the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year winners' local Safe Kids coalitions.
Favre threw 33 touchdowns in 2009 for an NFL-record ninth season with 30 TDs or more. He passed for 4,202 yards, including six games with 300 or more yards. Favre was nominated for five FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week awards in 2009, winning five times.
Manning passed for 4,500 yards and also threw 33 TDs this year. He became the first player all-time to pass for at least 3,500 yards in 12 consecutive seasons and to throw at least 25 touchdown passes in 12 seasons in a row. He had nine 300-yard games. Manning was also nominated for five FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week awards in 2009, winning twice.
Brees threw for 4,388 yards, extending his consecutive 4,000-yard passing seasons to four, a franchise record. He had 34 touchdowns. Brees was nominated for five FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week awards in 2009, winning five times.
For the ground award, Peterson rushed for 1,383 yards and 18 touchdowns, becoming only the third player in history to rush for more than 1,300 yards and more than 10 touchdowns in each of his first three seasons. Peterson rushed for at least two touchdowns in five different games in 2009 and rushed for more than 100 yards in three different games. He was nominated for two FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week awards in 2009, winning twice.
Johnson rushed for 2,006 yards in 2009, becoming the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards. He also broke the scrimmage yards record, totaling 2,509. Johnson recorded 11 consecutive 100-yard games, tied for the second-longest streak in NFL history, and posted at least 125 rushing yards in six consecutive games, tying the NFL record. He had 14 rushing touchdowns. He was nominated for six FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week awards in 2009, winning twice.
Jones-Drew had 1,391 yards rushing, 16 touchdowns and 1,765 yards from scrimmage. He set the franchise single-season record with 15 rushing touchdowns and he tied for first in the NFL with three touchdown runs of 60-plus yards. Jones-Drew was nominated for four FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week awards in 2009, winning once.
FedEx makes a $1,000 contribution to the local Safe Kids USA program for the weekly winners and $25,000 donations for the annual awards.
