JOE WEBB Quarterback/Receiver University of Alabama-Birmingham 6-3, 223 Birmingham, Alabama Wenonah High School
Anyone flipping on UAB on one of the few occasions they made it to national television coverage could see that Webb is an excellent athlete with NFL potential at some position. His play at quarterback the past two seasons could force NFL teams to give him a shot there next summer, but his combination of size and speed have caused most teams to project him to receiver.
He proved himself a capable receiver with 30 catches for 459 yards and three scores in 2007, but then coaches saw the need to play their best quarterback at the crucial position. He won Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year in 2009, throwing for 2,299 yards with 21 touchdowns and running for an astounding 1,427 more yards with 11 scores. Webb ran for less yardage but the same number of touchdowns in 2008 (1,021, 11 scores), but his passing yardage total actually decreased (2,367). His biggest improvement came by throwing only eight interceptions last season, cutting that number in half from his junior campaign.
Despite playing for a losing team in a middling conference, Webb's accomplishment of being the first player in NCAA history to throw for 2,000 yards and run for 1,000 more in consecutive seasons is impressive.
NFL teams really wanted to see him as a receiver at the Senior Bowl, and he looked good enough to warrant a mid-to-late-round draft pick. His pro day performance (4.44 40, 42.5" vertical, 11'05" broad jump, 4.40 short shuttle, 21 reps, 6.71 three-cone) would have received the same type of hype Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell did at the Combine - if only he had been invited. Webb's skill set could see him drafted much higher than people expect.
Webb became the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in consecutive seasons. Webb is ranked in the top 12 nationally of three statistical categories: total offense (5th), rushing (10th) and passing efficiency (12th). Webb finished his 2009 season with 2,299 passing yards and 1,427 yards on the ground, the latter the third-highest season total by a quarterback in NCAA history. For his career, Webb had 5,771 passing yards and 2,774 rushing yards for a total of 8,545 offensive yards. Webb also registered 37 passing touchdowns, 24 rushing TDs and four receiving scores.
