Two ex-Gophers hoping to stick with Vikings

A pair of undrafted rookie free agents – DE Cedric McKinley and CB Marcus Sherels – are hoping to extend their football careers in the state of Minnesota with the Vikings, as Mike Max of reports.

McKinley is a Florida native, who spent two years at Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College before finishing his college career with the Golden Gophers.

"My two years there, I loved it," McKinley said. "I look at it like it was a great opportunity to be there (with the Gophers)…It's just a great opportunity to be here, be a part of this community and with great players and coaches."

Sherels was a walk-on from Rochester, Minn., who has always been too small to play football. But he hasn't let that hold him back and he won't with the Vikings.

"Keep giving 100%," Sherels said. "I mean, my size is my size so I've just got to keep going out there, working, competing and see what happens."

Gophers dig their way onto Vikings roster

Back in the mid-1990s, the Vikings seemed to have a soft spot for Ohio State players.  In 1993, they drafted RB Robert Smith in the first round. Two years later, they spent another first-round pick on tackle Korey Stringer. Combined with the waiver-wire claim of WR Cris Carter, that was a pretty formidable Buckeyes trio of offensive talent, and all three were in place for the team's record-setting run in 1998.

This year, the Vikings have found a soft spot for a university that hasn't quite experienced as much collegiate success as "The Ohio State" did back in the 1990s. This time around, the Vikings are loading up on former Minnesota Gophers, although not many of them are likely to be remembered like Stringer, Carter and Smith … and the Vikings aren't giving up first-round draft picks for them either.

With the signing of WR Logan Payne on Friday, the Vikings now have five Gophers on their offseason roster – kicker Rhys Lloyd, Payne, CB Marcus Sherels, DE Cedric McKinley and LB Nate Triplett. All five are new to the Gophers this year. Triplett was the only one drafted by the Vikings and Lloyd is the only veteran among them with substantial NFL experience.

Of course, making it on a roster of 88 players is a far cry from making the 53-man roster that takes effect once the regular season starts.

Sharper tweets trash regarding Favre surgery

Ex-Viking Darren Sharper recently posted a couple jabs on his Twitter account at the expected return of Vikings quarterback Brett Favre following ankle surgery Friday morning.

"Well y'all seen Brett had surgery on that ankle we got after in the championship game. Come Thursday night 1st game. X marks the spot," Sharper tweets.

He followed that with:  "I've seen him play on one leg, but not against the WHO DAT nation."

Let the smack-talking begin, Viking fans.
