Moon wishes he had as much fun as Favre

Former Vikings quarterback Warren Moon was back at Winter Park this week dispensing advice to rookies instead of passes to accomplished receivers.

Moon was brought to Minnesota to talk to the rookies about life in the NFL and chatted with the team's official website during his visit. Moon, who had a successful NFL career that extended into his 40s, said he expects Brett Favre back and wishes he had as much fun playing as Favre appears to.

"Brett Favre to me is one of the few players that I would go pay to see the game because I love the way he plays and I love the passion he plays with," Moon told "I love the enthusiasm and the energy he plays the game with and he seems to have a lot of fun when he's out there, and that's something I don't think I did enough of when I played the game. I was a little more serious and I wish I could have enjoyed the moment a little bit more, like he does."

But, like Moon, Favre found the Vikings to be a welcoming team in the latter stages of his career. Moon said he wasn't surprised by Favre's success with the Vikings last year.

"What he's doing as far as his physical ability doesn't surprise me. The guy is just a freak of nature and he just continues to show up every week, regardless of the bumps and bruises he has on his body," Moon said. "And he still plays the game at a high level, so I expect to see him back here at some point in the near future."

Moon also talked about one of his former teammates, defensive tackle John Randle, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August.

"He was probably one of the best interior defensive linemen ever to play this game. He was relentless," Moon said. "He was a teammate of mine, a really good teammate, a guy you could count on. He was going to give you everything he had every day at practice. He kept everything lively."

Vikings help with 500,000 meals

We take a break from the "who will be there, who won't" speculation before minicamp to promote a Vikings activity in the community.

Last year, the Vikings Children's Fund Summer Lunch Program provided more than 200,000 meals to Minnesota children, and this year's effort launched this week looking to provide 500,000 meals. The Vikings and Target have pledge $300,000 to the effort.

"It's imperative that as a community we come together to give our children the best future possible, and, often, that means giving them what they need today," said Steve LaCroix, vice president of sales and marketing, chief marketing officer with the Minnesota Vikings.

According to the Minnesota Department of Education, 293,000 Minnesota school children receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, but fewer than 60,000 children receive them during the summer months.

With an awareness campaign from Second Harvest Heartland, the combined efforts are bringing 40 more meal sites to the program to bring the total to 450. The campaign is also focused on raising awareness of the program in the community with billboards promoting phone numbers and text options for people wanting to find the nearest site.

"What Second Harvest Heartland has done this past year with the Vikings for the Summer Food Service Program is considered a national model by our agency," said Alan Shannon, Public Affairs director, USDA Food and Nutrition Service – Midwest Region.
