Favre ranked 46th in top 100 NFL players

Who is better than Brett Favre? According to Peter Schrager of, 45 players in the NFL are better than Favre.

Schrager has been counting down his top 100 players in the league. On Wednesday, that meant revealing the numbers 40 through 60. Favre checked in at No. 46 after being unranked following his 2008 season with the New York Jets.

"Will he or won't he? Honestly, I don't have the energy to think about it at this point," Schrager wrote. "I refuse to let my third straight July 4th weekend be dominated by Favre retirement coverage. If he plays, great, he's a top 50 player, no question. If he doesn't, he doesn't. See ya in Canton in five years. Next …"

Favre checked in just ahead of Ravens QB Joe Flacco (47th) and Texans QB Matt Schaub (49th).

Vikings players, alumni receive grant money for camps

Several current and former Vikings were among 150 players and coaches that combined to receive $600,000 from the NFL Youth Football Fund to support their free youth football camps. That amount brings the total to more than $2.5 million awarded from the fund to support camps in recent years.

"We are pleased to help our players and coaches give back during the off-season," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "These camps are an excellent way to help young fans learn skills and stay active and fit."

As part of the grant arrangement, the coaches are required to watch two informational videos and answer questions that are designed to test their knowledge on safety issues such as dehydration and concussions.

Among the current Vikings who were recipients are center Jon Cooper, who is part of a camp in Fort Collins, Colo., on July 6; E.J. Henderson, whose camp was June 11 in Eden Prairie; and Madieu Williams, whose camp was April 24 in College Park, Md.

A few former Vikings are also among the 150 who received grant money for their camps, including Mewelde Moore (April 24 in Baton Rouge, La.), John Swain (June 25 in Minneapolis) and Chuck Wiley (June 26 in Baton Rouge, La.). Former Minnesota Gopher Darrell Reid, who is with the Denver Broncos, also received some of the grant for his July 10 camp in East Freehold, N.J.

Benefit for Kluwe connection

Chris Kluwe is hoping fans and potential fans of his band, Tripping Icarus, will come to the aid of his former sound board operator/mixer, the late Andy Lindberg.

Lindberg was killed in a car crash last month when he fell asleep at the wheel during a long drive back from Wisconsin at 4:30 a.m. His wife Kimi Chaia-Lindberg was also in the car and had to have some reconstruction done around one of her eyes as the result of the accident.

In order to help her with medical costs and other expenses, Tripping Icarus will be part of a benefit July 2 at the main room of First Avenue with eight other bands. Tripping Icarus will play for about 30 minutes, like the other bands, and Kluwe is expecting to be on stage around 11 p.m. Doors will open around 7 p.m. with a $10 charge. Kimi has no health insurance, as she was just getting out of school and looking for a job.

On a related note, Kluwe said the band will have an 11-song CD released sometime in July, but since Andy was doing much of the post-production work the exact release date isn't known for sure.
