Vikings draft picks halfway home

The reported signing of DE Everson Griffin to a four-year contract means the Vikings are halfway home in signing their draft picks.

Those that have agreed to terms are fullback Ryan D'Imperio and tight end Mickey Shuler (both seventh-rounders), linebacker Nate Triplett (fifth round) and Griffen (fourth round). Those left to complete the contract negotiations are sixth-round quarterback Joe Webb, fifth-round offensive lineman Chris DeGeare, second-round running back Toby Gerhart and second-round cornerback Chris Cook.

The Vikings start training camp on Friday afternoon, meaning the team has two days to sign four picks. Most of the signings should be relatively straightforward with slotted signing bonuses and standard minimum salaries, and figuring out those signing bonuses will continue to get easier as players from other teams around the Vikings' picks continue to be signed.

However, complicating the matter is the uncertainty without a Collective Bargaining Agreement beyond the 2010 season. Bonuses spread into the second year are made trickier with that hurdle in place.

Webb is the only unsigned sixth-rounder, and his deal might be lagging behind because of the position he plays. Sometimes agents look for more of a bonus for quarterbacks than their slotted draft position would indicate.

On July 16, 60 percent of the league's picks were signed. Twelve days later, the Vikings are now at 50 percent. No matter the reasons for the delays, there aren't any protracted holdouts expected for Minnesota because the Vikings didn't have a first-round draft choice. Those are usually the hardest contracts to navigate.

By Sunday, every NFL team will be in camp. By Friday, the Vikings hope to have every one of their draft picks signed.
