Vikings start with two on PUP

The Vikings opened training camp with two players on the physically-unable-perform list – wide receiver Sidney Rice (hip) and cornerback Cedric Griffin (ACL).

Rice suffered a hip injury in the NFC Championship Game and said it flared up in minicamp. He didn't have surgery on the hip, but he said they will be cautious with his comeback during the early stages of training camp.

"We're taking it easy, being cautious. That's what the plan is and we're going to stick to it right now," said Rice, who didn't get into specifics of the exact injury.

Childress said surgery was considered after minicamp, but the some of the specialists Rice saw didn't think that was necessary. Childress was asked about his concern with the "lingering" injury.

"I think the word ‘linger' speaks to that. Why does it linger? I think because it is still uncomfortable for him," Childress said. "He was seen by not only our doctors, but a couple of different specialists. We decided we didn't want to be as aggressive as you could be, with surgical procedure. I think he will be okay. That is what the doctors wanted to with it."

A few other notes from the opening practice:

* With Rice out, Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian were getting the reps with the first-team offense in two-receiver sets.

* E.J. Henderson, who fractured his femur in December, was on the field and said he felt good. He rotated with Jasper Brinkley taking turns with the first-team defense.

* Childress said all the players came to camp with their weight under control and that he didn't bother with a conditioning test because he didn't want to tired their legs too bad before camp kicked off.

* As expected, Brett Favre was a no-show. "He needs time, he gets time," Childress said.

* Besides Favre not showing and Rice and Griffin on the PUP, all other players were practicing.

* We'll have more on the Rice situation, as well E.J. Henderson and more on the front page of throughout the night.

E.B. II a ballboy

Training camp can be a grueling time for players, but it offers a select few younger kids an opportunity to show their work ethic and rub elbows with the pros.

More than a decade ago, that was Larry Fitzgerald Jr., now a Pro Bowl receiver and highly respect workout warrior, who was in Vikings training camp learning from Cris Carter and Randy Moss.

This year, the son of running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, Elijah, will be getting that opportunity. The middle-schooler is only a couple hours away from his first duty.

Williams' weight down

Pat Williams checked into training camp Thursday with less baggage … on his body.

We all knew heights and weights listed on the roster aren't always 100 percent accurate, but Williams is doing his best to make it right.

Last year, the nose tackle was listed at 317 pounds, but his comments on his conditioning right now tell the real story.

"I've been training hard. I've been feeling good, lost 18 pounds. I just want to feel good this year, so if I want to take some days off at practice, coach won't get mad at me. I'm down to 324," he said. "I feel good, ready to go."

So if Williams is "down to 324" and lost 18 pounds, that means he was playing at 342 last year, not 317. Either way, the weight loss should be a good thing for Williams' conditioning and stamina.
