Friday afternoon practice notes

About 50 players took the field Friiday afternoon for a special teams practice, as the team worked on punt and kick coverage.

Most of the starters had the afternoon off, but not all of them. Linebackers Chad Greenway and Ben Leber and safeties Madieu Williams and Tyrell Johnson all went through their paces as part of the practice. However, all but Johnson was excused from the session after about a half hour.

The Vikings have the rest of the day off, but resume to work at 9 a.m. Saturday with two practices – one from 9-11 a.m. and the other from 5-7 p.m.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON PRACTICE NOTES

* Chris Cook continued to impress at camp, this time as he worked as a gunner on the punt coverage team. He covered two kicks near the goal line that the return man let bounce.

* Toby Gerhart is seeing action on the kickoff return team as a blocker.

* Long snapper Cullen Loeffler got his knee bent the wrong way during the practice, but remained on the field.

Friday morning practice notes

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said Friday he continues to be amazed at the progress of MLB E.J. Henderson, who continues his comeback from a gruesome broken leg suffered at Arizona last year.

Frazier said that his progress continues to show signs of daily improvement and that he is getting closer each day to making a recovery and returning to the starting lineup. After being in for 16 reps of live hitting Thursday, he had 20 plays in the Friday morning practice.

Frazier said the biggest issue now is how his injured leg responds the day after heavy activity. He said "so far, so good" as far as the process has gone thus far.

PRACTICE NOTES

* After missing five days of practice, Adrian Peterson returned to work Friday. He didn't take part in the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 contact drills, but didn't show any ill-effects of the muscle tightness that has sidelined him since Sunday.

* The usual suspects were missing in action at the morning practice – Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin, Cedric Griffin, John Sullivan, Darius Reynaud and J Leman,

* Steve Hutchinson spoke briefly about the discussion of an 18-game regular season. Check out the VU home page this afternoon to hear what Hutch had to say.

How hurt is Favre?

Anyone who hasn't been living under a rock this past week has heard plenty about Brett Favre. Whether it was indications that he was retiring or follow-up questions to his teammates about that, Favre-a-palooza was in full effect.

Finally, when Favre was caught trying to scramble to his truck after a practice in Mississippi, he said if his ankle was healthy, he'd play. That ankle is scheduled to be checked out by noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews next week, and we'll likely get a timeline that matches up with Favre's preferred return date in a couple weeks.

Of course, Brad Childress has said Favre looked like he was moving around fine when he visited him before training camp started. It looks like he was right if a photo from Favre's workout with high school players earlier this week is any indication.

The ankle might just be an excuse to buy more time.

Adrian Peterson looks like he will practice. He has a helmet and is on the field, apparently recovered from "tightness" in the leg. #Vikings
