Short, hot practice; no Harvin update

As temperatures pushed 90 degrees on a day when the heat index was forecast to reach 108, the Vikings played it cool Monday afternoon. When it came time to moving to the full-team portion of the afternoon practice, the players shed helmets and ran through things at half speed.

The tempo of practice didn't provide for a lot of notes, but essentially the same crew of players missing from Monday morning were inactive again during the afternoon practice, which ran for just over an hour.

There was still no sign of Percy Harvin and Brad Childress said he doesn't know when the receiver will return after the death of his grandmother. Childress said he was "flying in the dark" when it came to an update on Harvin's return.

After experiencing a similar, albeit in-season, situation with Troy Williamson a few years ago, Childress said he has learned to take a different approach.

"The thing that I've learned is that everybody grieves differently. That's just the facts of it. You've got respect that and appreciate that," he said.

Glazer goes inside the Favre drama

Many fans are looking to blame either the media or Brett Favre himself after conflicting signals regarding text messages Favre sent to teammates last week, indicating he was going to retire.

FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer was in Mankato on Friday and Saturday and gathered more information on what went down – essentially confirming what has been reported: Favre sent the text messages, he was offered an increased salary and he is still struggling with whether or not he should play in 2010.

"He's torn," a member of the Vikings told Glazer. "I think in his mind he was done, but loves the guys in this locker room and doesn't want to let them down. He didn't want to (come back), but I don't think he can say no to these guys. He's tortured."

According to Glazer's report, which can be seen in full here, Favre is doesn't want to let down his teammates, who put on a texting and phone-calling campaign to their quarterback to convince him to return. His ankle is apparently still a deciding factor in his decision/indecision.

Despite an increased offer to pay him $20 million instead of the $13 million he was scheduled to make, Glazer said he doesn't believe the delay is about the money, which is exactly what a team source told VikingUpdate.com last week.

Despite all the indecision, Glazer writes that he still believes will play this year, if his surgically repaired ankle allows.

Vikings beat the heat

Monday's morning practice ended about 25 minutes early with temps climbing into the mid-80s and the Vikings being precautious with the heat. It wasn't a full-pads practice, but there were was enough action to keep things lively.

"We're well aware that temperatures are a little higher than what they have been. Coach Childress made a concerted effort to slow it down just a little bit, the tempo," defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said. "It seems like we came out of practice pretty well. We were still able to get the work done that we needed to get done."

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said the heat is a good thing to help focus on their assignments.

"They were sharp in their assignments and it showed that they had some mental toughness there," Bevell said.

MONDAY MORNING QUICK HITS

* Adrian Peterson continues to ramp up his comeback from a tight hamstring that limited him during the first week of camp. He took first-team reps during all portions of the Monday morning practice.

* Percy Harvin didn't return to practice on Monday morning, despite indications that he would be there. Bevell said he doesn't know how long Harvin will remain away.

* Joining Harvin with absences were Brett Favre, Sidney Rice, Cedric Griffin, Cullen Loeffler, Darius Reynaud, J Leman, Anthony Herrera and Visanthe Shiancoe.

* Tarvaris Jackson will start on Saturday night, but timing of when certain players will enter the game hasn't been decided yet.

* The Vikings are scheduled to practice from 2:45 to 4:05 this afternoon.

* We'll have more notes as part of an extended practice report on the front page of VikingsUpdate.com shortly.

Hot times in Mankato

The Vikings are scheduled to resume training camp with four straight two-a-days, starting Monday and running through Thursday as a lead-up to the end of the Mankato portion of camp.

The last week in Mankato is expected to be scorcher and it starts today. Temperatures are expected to reach about 90 degrees today, but the heat index is the important thing to watch, and that is expected to reach about 108 degrees in the afternoon.

The Vikings are scheduled to practice from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. this morning and again from 2:45 p.m. to 4:05 p.m. Monday. We'll have to wait and see if they adjust anything as the day goes on.

For now, the points of interest are the expected return of Percy Harvin after taking last week to attend to the death of his grandmother, as well as how much work Adrian Peterson gets on his comeback from tightness in his left leg.

With practice starting in about 20 minutes, we'll update on our Twitter and Facebook pages throughout (which feeds to this blog), with a quick recap on the blog after practice and more in-depth features on the front page of VikingUpdate.com throughout the day.
