Afternoon practice: Hot! Hot! Hot!

For the most part, the Vikings have got by pretty easy during training camp. Only one practice was forced inside and, by and large, heat was a factor only occasionally … until Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after practice ended Wednesday morning, the sun broke out and the clouds/haze burned off. With temperatures pushing into the 90s, the Vikings practices for an hour and 15 minutes in the sweltering heat on the main field at Blakeslee Stadium.

There wasn't much to the practice itself – the defense played half of it with no helmets on. A crowd filled the half of the stadium they were allowed to sit in, but the heat took its toll on many of them, many of whom bailed after about 45 minutes.

* On his way out to the field, veteran Lito Sheppard shook his head about the heat and high humidity. "I'm too old for this," he said, shaking his head. It's days like this that have No. 4's ankle swelling up a bit.

* The usual suspects were missing in action at the afternoon practice – Percy Harvin, Sidney Rice, Cedric Griffin, John Sullivan and J Leman.

* The players as a group seemed relieved that, after a hectic two weeks, training camp will break tomorrow.

Wednesday A.M. Practice Notes

The Vikings got on the field for an overcast, foggy morning practice at Mankato Wednesday, giving extra attention to the quarterback drills. The team worked in the 2-minute offense, 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 action.

The Vikings also got back Jim Kleinsasser and Visanthe Shiancoe, who had both been sidelined with injuries.

"It's great to get back out on the field," Shiancoe said. "We've had a lot of guys with injuries – some serious, some not as much – so getting some of these guys back is critical as we start to wind things up for the start of the preseason.

* Percy Harvin remained a no-show at camp. After tweaking an ankle injury early in camp, between injuries, a death in his family and migraines upon his return to Minnesota, Harvin has taken part in just two practices.

* Ryan Longwell was a perfect 6-for-6 in field goal attempts during a full-team kicking drill.

* Both wide receivers Taye Biddle and Ray Small made big catches during the 11-on-11 drills. On Joe Webb's final pass of the two-minute drill, he threw a Hail Mary into the end zone that Small came down with in a crowd. On Sage Rosenfels' final pass of his shift, Biddle got in a jump ball with CB DeAndre Wright, tipped the ball in the air and came down with it before falling out of bounds – getting a big cheer from the fans and his offensive teammates.
