No decision on Henderson yet

The Vikings' starters will play a series apiece in the team's preseason opener Saturday night in St. Louis, according to head coach Brad Childress.

Of course, a number of starters won't be in action at all, including those who have missed significant time due to injuries of late. CB Cedric Griffin and WR Sidney Rice started and closed the Mankato portion of training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list. They could be pulled off that list at any time during training camp but can't go back on after that. If they start the season on the PUP, they would be out for at least the first six games.

But one starter from last year who has surprised almost everyone with his recovery from a fracture femur is LB E.J. Henderson. He started training camp in a limited fashion but has steadily increased his workload, appearing to be without much limitation of late. Still, the Vikings aren't sure they are ready to put him in game action on artificial turf just yet.

"We're still talking about that. He's been involved in the live goal-line, short-yardage segments that we've had here," Childress said. "We haven't had him on Astroturf yet. We're still knocking that around a little bit."

Tempers flare on final day

The final day of training camp in Mankato included a dust-up between defensive end Ray Edwards, rookie running back Toby Gerhart and spilled over to defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier getting involved.

The hit, which Edwards said was intentional, led to Gerhart standing up for himself and pushing back. Frazier jumped in as a peacemaker and ended up getting into a shoving match with Edwards as he attempted to break things up.

Check the VikingUpdate.com home page soon to what what all three had to say.

A.M. PRACTICE NOTES

* U.S. Senator Al Franken was among those in the crowd for the morning practice.

* The final day of camp was without a Percy Harvin sighting.

* The Vikings have one more practice to go – a special teams practice from 2:10 to 3:15 p.m. this afternoon.

Former scout spotlights NFC North teams

NFL Network's Bucky Brooks, a former NFL scout, highlighted a few players to watch around the NFC North. He picked at least one player from each team to watch.

When it came to the Vikings, he focused on Adrian Peterson's fumbles and an increased emphasis on ball security. But behind Peterson, he had a common take on rookie Toby Gerhart.

"He struggled a little bit picking up the offense, picking up the protection part of it. That's the big thing for running backs," Brooks said. "They make the adjustment from the college game to the pro game, pass protection is so big – blitz pickup."

For the Packers, Brooks likes TE Jermichael Finley to continue to emerge. "Watching him in camp, this guy is unguardable," Brooks said.

In Detroit, the former scout highlighted QB Matthew Stafford and the offense, but the biggest praise came for rookie back Jahvid Best, a player Brooks believes should be a front-runner for NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

The focus in Chicago was on the obvious – the addition of defensive end Julius Peppers.
