Report: Vikings close to signing Javon Walker

The Vikings are "on the verge" of signing WR Javon Walker, according to ESPN. Walker was one of two receivers the Vikings worked out on Friday morning, the other being Brandon Jones, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks over the weekend.

The interest in experienced receivers makes sense for the Vikings. Sidney Rice is still on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list, Percy Harvin has struggled with a death in his family and migraine headaches over the last three weeks, and the Vikings placed Jaymar Johnson on injured reserve with a broken thumb.

The pairing of Walker with QB Brett Favre could be interesting. Here is the summary of that dynamic from the ESPN story:

"Walker, however, clashed with Favre before he left the Packers as a free agent after the 2005 season. Favre torched Walker for skipping the Green Bay Packers' 2005 minicamp. Walker was seeking a new contract at the time.

"A year later, Walker asked the Packers to trade him in part because of Favre's comments. The Broncos acquired Walker from Green Bay for a second-round pick in the 2006 draft."

Walker spent four years with the Packers and had an 89-catch, 1,382-yard performance in 2004 with Favre as his quarterback. He had 1,084 yards in 2006 with the Denver Broncos, but he hasn't had more than 300 yards receiving in the last three seasons.

Favre gets one series, Vikings trail at halftime

Vikings quarterback Brett Favre received only one series for the Vikings in his first preseason action, completing one pass for 13 yards, the first play of the drive, to Adrian Peterson.

That was followed by two runs by Peterson and a sack of Favre that put the Vikings in a hole. He ended up with only four plays and left the game with a 7-0 deficit.

Tarvaris Jackson entered the game and led the offense on a field goal drive in his first action, going four of five for 26 yards on his opening series. Jackson finished the first half completing 7 of 11 passes for 43 yards on three series of work.

The Vikings trail 7-3 at the half.

Sanford getting the start

Vikings safety Jamarca Sanford is getting the start in place of Tyrell Johnson tonight in San Francisco in the team's second preseason game. Sanford and Johnson have been rotating at strong safety since the start of training camp, but the chance in the lineup wasn't announced prior to Sunday.

Sanford, the Vikings' 2010 seventh-round draft choice, started one game for Johnson in 2009, against Cincinnati on Dec. 13. Sanford finished third on the team with 19 special-teams tackles.

Childress announced one other change in the secondary on Friday when he informed the media that Asher Allen would start in place of Lito Sheppard at right cornerback and the two would rotate series after that.

Rookie second-round pick Chris Cook will also replace left cornerback Antoine Winfield after one series, according to Childress. The starters are expected to play the first quarter.

Two other changes that aren't a surprise are Greg Lewis starting in place of Percy Harvin (migraines), who didn't make the trip to San Francisco, and Jon Cooper starting in place of John Sullivan (calf) at center.

Brandon Jones signs with Seahawks

One of the two receivers the Minnesota Vikings worked out on Friday is headed elsewhere, with Brandon Jones signing with the Seattle Seahawks, according to ESPN's John Clayton.

Jones and Javon Walker were both in for a look with the Vikings. Both left without signing, so now Jones is off the market.

Walker, 31, may or may not still be a consideration. The biggest question with him might be his knee, which has contributed to his lack of productivity the past two seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

If healthy, however, Walker might offer the most in the way of immediate contribution as he is familiar with the team's offense, having played with Brett Favre and for offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell during their Green Bay days.

The Vikings entered Sunday's preseason game at San Francisco with Sidney Rice (hip) and Percy Harvin (migraines) are out. Jaymar Johnson (thumb) landed on injured reserve last week. That put the team's depth chart with Bernard Berrian and Greg Lewis starting with Logan Payne moving into the No. 3 spot.

Payne has had a nice training camp, but the Vikings have given no indication they are satisfied with their existing depth at wide receiver, so it still would not be surprising if they signed Walker or some other veteran.

Vikings-49ers notes

The Vikings face the 49ers on Sunday night and Brett Favre will make the start, getting one or two series of action. Of course, everyone remembers how it ended last season when the Vikings and 49ers faced each other in the Metrodome. Greg Lewis made the winning touchdown catch in the closing seconds of the game to give Minnesota the win.

This one, being preseason, means much less, but here are some preseason stats between the two teams:

* The Vikings have a 3-2 preseason series edge against San Francisco, and in the regular season and postseason the 49ers have a 21-22-1 advantage.

* Overall, the Vikings are 134-87-3 in their preseason games. With Brad Childress as the head coach, they are 9-7-1 in the preseason.

* Ryan Longwell entered the NFL in 1997 as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers, but he was sent packing to Green Bay in favor of some kicker name Gary Anderson.

* Vikings receivers coach George Stewart was an assistant in San Francisco for seven seasons (1996-2002).

* Offensive line coach Pat Morris spent seven seasons (1997-2003) with the 49ers.

* One of the biggest connections is with Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and 49ers head coach Mike Singletary. The two were teammates on the Chicago Bears Super Bowl XX team.
