Harvin, Greenway among Tuesday's missing

Vikings receiver Percy Harvin was expected to return to practice on Tuesday, but he wasn't there at the start of practice. Harvin has missed all but a few practices in the last three weeks because of migraine issues and the death of his grandmother. He collapsed at practice last Thursday and spent the night overnight in a local hospital but returned to the sidelines for Friday's practice.

Harvin hasn't spoken to the media since leaving training camp on Aug. 31.

Also missing from practice were Sidney Rice, who had hip surgery on Monday, and linebacker Chad Greenway. Defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy, who made the start in Sunday night's preseason game for Pat Williams, also wasn't out on the practice field at the start of practice.

Head coach Brad Childress is expected to address the media after practice.

Vikings sign Javon Walker, waive RB Moats

The Vikings have officially signed wide receiver Javon Walker, according to the team's web site.

Walker spent his first four years in the NFL with the Packers and had an 89-catch, 1,382-yard performance in 2004 with Favre as his quarterback. Walker had 1,084 receiving yards in 2006 with the Denver Broncos, but he hasn't had more than 300 yards receiving in the last three seasons.

The Vikings waived running back Ryan Moats to make room for Walker.

McKinnie says Favre is tough, usually successful on audibles

Bryant McKinnie said when Brett Favre changes a play, it usually works. When that's the case, there isn't a problem.

McKinnie joined Fox Sports Radio after a report surfaced last week, citing an anonymous player source, claiming that Favre didn't respect Childress' knowledge of offense.

"I think that's rumors. We're not really sure if somebody from the team is saying that or the media created that or whatever. They are just basically rumors that are being started. We're trying to get rid of those so they don't serve as a distraction during the course of the season," McKinnie said during his radio interview.

"The coaches give him a guideline of what he wants him to do, but sometimes, if Brett sees something on the field, he'll just go with what he feels is best. It usually works so there's usually never no argument."

McKinnie also said that Favre added some motivation to the locker room last year when he showed up.

"I felt like he came in and motivated the whole team to do well. When he got to the locker room last year, I felt like everyone stepped up their game on both sides of the ball. Everyone bought into everything he was preaching, coming to win and trying to get to the Super Bowl. I felt like a lot of guys were playing for him," McKinnie said.

With the New Orleans Saints regular-season opener now only 16 days away, McKinnie said the Vikings need to be careful to protect Favre. Last year in the NFC Championship Game against the Saints, Favre took a beating.

"I think a lot of people are just going to come after him anyways… We have to be very careful about that, letting people get to him, because I feel like that is everybody's goal, especially this season," McKinnie said.

"Brett is pretty tough. As you can see, he has lasted this long. He's been hit pretty hard a few times and has been able to bounce back and never really miss a game, so he's a tough guy. I give him that credit."
