Short week could alter starters

After Saturday's win over the Seattle Seahawks, Vikings coach Brad Childress indicated that the starters might see some action in Thursday's preseason finale against the Broncos. But with a short week of preparation and Childress being more understanding of keeping veterans fresh, that might not happen – at least with the regular starters who have put in three preseason games of work.

"We've got shoulder pads on today. A lot of times we get just as much out of these guys in shoulder pads and had some extended work today," Childress said. "We will go to shells tomorrow and obviously they've got a game on Thursday. It's tough on their bodies and I'm aware of that."

Childress said he would gauge the possibilities of the starters' snaps "by how we practice here today and tomorrow."

He also declined to discuss injuries. The Vikings had six players not practicing on Monday (in addition to Cedric Griffin and Sidney Rice, who each remain on the physically-unable-to-perform list): CB Chris Cook, RB Toby Gerhart, C John Sullivan, DT Jimmy Kennedy, LB J Leman, and WR Logan Payne.

Second-rounders among missing

Maybe Percy Harvin was right that doctors may have found something to alleviate his problems with migraines. Harvin was back at the Vikings' first practice following their third preseason game, which was Harvin's preseason debut Saturday night against the Seattle Seahawks.

The same can't be said for the Vikings' second-round picks in last April's draft – cornerback Chris Cook and running back Toby Gerhart. Both were missing from the start of Monday's practice after each appeared to hurt their knees on Saturday. Cook had his knee wrapped in ice on the sidelines after his injury.

Also missing Monday were starting C John Sullivan, DT Jimmy Kennedy, LB J Leman, and WR Logan Payne.

Favre's ankle under maintenance

Brett Favre's thrice-operated-on left ankle continues to get treatment. According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, Favre got "an injection of lubricant" in his left ankle following the Vikings' win on Saturday night.

Favre had scar tissue and bone spurs removed from the ankle in late May and he said earlier this month that another bone spur was discovered to have formed between that surgery and his follow-up appointment about a month ago.

"It's catching up with me, all this stuff,'' said Favre, who turns 41 in October.

Another interesting nugget from King, who attended Saturday's game, was that Favre's wife Deanna was present during the quarterback's surgery, performed by Dr. James Andrews. She must have been impressed with what was removed.

"They took out a cup full of stuff – bone and all these other loose bodies,'' Favre told King. "Deanna watched and told me, ‘If you don't feel a lot better, I'll be shocked.'''
