Vikings opportunistic with 17-7 halftime lead

Despite the Broncos running a more efficient passing game, the Vikings held a 17-7 halftime lead and they owe it all to turnovers.

Erin Henderson has two fumble recoveries, including taking advantage of a muffed snap on rookie Tim Tebow's first action of the game and returning it 35 yards for a touchdown.

The Vikings' other touchdown was set up by another fumble recovery by Henderson. On this one, safety Colt Anderson, who started the game, hit RB Lance Ball and popped the ball loose. Henderson recovered inside the Vikings' red zone and Albert Young went to work. Young carried three straight times, the last one a 1-yard touchdown for the 17-7 lead.

Kyle Orton started for the Broncos and went two series, but Tebow was the leading passer at halftime, going 9-for-10 for 113 yards. Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson combined to go 3-for-12 for 12 yards and each has a brutal 39.6 passer rating.

Albert Young had 13 carries for 42 yards.

Broncos sitting a few starters too

The Broncos are sitting four of their starters, according to notes distributed in the press box before Thursday's game, but those are due to injury.

On offense, Stanley Daniels will start for Zane Beadles and Riar Greer will start for Daniel Graham.

On defense, Ronald Fields will start at nose tackle for Jamal Williams and Perrish Cox will start at cornerback for Andre Goodman.

The Broncos aren't dressing several other players: WR Brandon Stokley, S Darcel McBath, OL Russ Hockstein, WR Demaryius Thomas, LB Elvis Dumervil and LB Darrell Reid.

Vikings starters will be sidelined

Welcome to junior varsity night on Mall of America Field.

Vikings quarterback Brett Favre will not be playing in Thursday night's preseason finale against the Denver Broncos. That will also be the case for almost all the other starters.

Rookie CB Chris Cook and veteran DT Jimmy Kennedy will not be dressing, but almost the whole crew of normal starters won't be in the starting lineup.

Here are the extensive changes: Tarvaris Jackson is starting for Favre, Taye Biddle for Percy Harvin, Greg Camarillo for Bernard Berrian, Patrick Brown for Bryant McKinnie, Chris DeGeare for Steve Hutchinson, Jon Cooper for John Sullivan, Ryan Cook for Anthony Herrera, Drew Radovich for Phil Loadholt, Jeff Dugan for Visanthe Shiancoe, Ryan D'Imperio for Naufahu Tahi and Albert Young for Adrian Peterson.

On defense, Jayme Mtichell is starting for Ray Edwards, Fred Evans for Pat Williams, Letroy Guion for Kevin Williams, Brian Robison for Jared Allen, Heath Farwell for Chad Greenway, Jasper Brinkley for E.J. Henderson, Erin Henderson for Ben Leber, Asher Allen for Antoine Winfield and Colt Anderson for Madieu Williams.

The only listed starters that are expected to start are CB Lito Sheppard and SS Tyrell Johnson.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said on Tuesday that head coach Brad Childress hadn't made the determination if starters would be playing and, if so, how long they would play. We got that answer about an hour before kickoff.

Rookie quarterback Joe Webb said on Tuesday that he expected to get into the game sometime in the third quarter and finish with about a quarter and a half of action.
