Houshmandzadeh gets his release

Seahawks receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh got his release from Seattle, but he doesn't seem like much of a fit in Minnesota anymore.

The Vikings put the full-court press on Houshmandzadeh during 2009 free agency, but he decided to sign with the Seahawks because he didn't like Minnesota's quarterback situation. That was well before the Vikings got Brett Favre in the fold.

However, in the time since the Vikings went after Houshmandzadeh, they have drafted Percy Harvin and traded for Greg Camarillo. That and Houshmandzadeh's salary expectations likely mean he isn't a big priority for the Vikings anymore. The tables have turned.

Sharper too shaken for opener

Two of the Saints' more impactful players on defense during their NFC Championship Game win over the Vikings won't be part of the action when the Vikings travel to New Orleans again next Thursday.

Former Vikings safety Darren Sharper, who put a big hit on Brett Favre in the NFC Championship, will be placed on the reserve/PUP list, putting him out of action for the first six weeks of the season, according to NewOrleans.com.

Of course, Sharper was notorious for his "X marks the spot" comment on Twitter, insinuating that the Saints would be coming after Favre's surgically repaired ankle. That set off several volleying tweets between Sharper and Minnesota TE Visanthe Shiancoe, producing an infamous Twitter trash-talking session.

In the end, it was Sharper's surgically repaired knee that will sideline him until at least October.

Saints DE Bobby McCray, who became infamous for his extracurricular ankle activity on Favre during the Championship Game, was released on Friday.
