Steen, Elliott lead Blues past Flames

Alexander Steen scored twice and Brian Elliott earned the St. Louis Blues’ second straight shutout as the Blues beat the host Calgary Flames 4-0 on Tuesday night.

With the victory, the Blues (45-20-5, 95 points in 70 games) took over the top spot in the Western Conference, leapfrogging the Anaheim Ducks (44-20-7, 95 points in 71 games).

The Flames, who fell to 38-27-5 with 81 points, had no answer for Elliott or the Blues’ top line.

Elliott stopped all 25 shots he faced to record his fifth shutout of the season, 30th in his career and 21st with the Blues, which moved him into first place in franchise history ahead of former teammate Jaroslav Halak. Elliott tied Halak with his shutout on Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers.

St. Louis’ top line — Steen, David Backes and T.J. Oshie — accounted for three of its four goals on Tuesday and seven points.

Steen gave the Blues a 1-0 lead at the 11:32 mark of the second period with his 21st goal of the season, assisted by T.J. Oshie and David Backes.

St. Louis scored three times in the third period for the second consecutive games.

The Blues opened the final period with a goal just 1:18 in.

Vladimir Tarasenko stole a puck in the offensive zone, fed a pass to Jaden Schwartz who found Jori Lehtera in the slot and Lehtera buried it for his 11th of the year.

Steen added his second goal, and 22nd of the season, on a slapshot with 10:22 remaining off assists from Oshie and Backes.

Backes added an unassisted empty-net goal, his 24th on the year, with 5:35 remaining.

The Blues have opened their six-game road trip with back-to-back shutout victories and next head to Winnipeg for a Thursday matchup with the Jets (35-23-12, 82 points).
