Butler played in 33 games with the Blues last season. The St. Louis native accounted for nine points (three goals, six assists) and 23 penalty minutes. The 28-year-old defenseman recorded one assist in his only game with the Wolves this season.
Fabbri scored a goal in his NHL debut in the season opener against the Edmonton Oilers but then suffered a concussion after taking a hit to the head in the first period against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.
The Blues have Scottie Upshall and Scott Gomez available to fill in for for Fabbri, but St. Louis was in need of extra defenseman after Kevin Shattenkirk left Tuesday’s win against the Calgary Flames with an injury.
The Blues (2-1-0, 4 points) will play the Oilers (0-3-0, 0 points) on Thursday night at Rexell Place, the third game of their season-long six game road trip. The Blues continue their road trip with games against the Vancouver Canucks on Friday, the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday and then the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday before returning to St. Louis.
