ICAST 2014: Intelligent Trolling Motors

Trolling motor manufacturers unveil units that do more of the brainwork, and back work, so anglers can concentrate on fishing.

MotorGuide Gateway

Last year MotorGuide introduced the Xi5, a bow-mount with Pinpoint GPS technology that provides fishermen with critical boat control features—Anchor, Heading Lock, Route Record, Cruise Control and more.

In partnership with Lowrance, the company upped the ante this year with its new Gateway kit, which connects the Xi5 with Lowrance’s HDS Gen2 or HDS Gen2 electronics via the plug-and-play NMEA 2000 network.

Anglers can use the sonar unit to lock onto waypoint and anchor locations, set and follow custom routes, and navigate to select hotspots right on the screen.

Minn Kota Ulterra

Minn Kota calls the Ulterra the “next generation” trolling motor. Available in either i-Pilot or i-Pilot Link versions, the bow-mount offers all the automated navigation and boat-control features, plus fully automated stow-and-deploy and power trim features.

An angler can put the unit in play, stow it for running, and lift or drop the motor from either a wireless remote control or a corded foot-pedal.
