Why Bluegill Populations Stunt

When you are catching truck loads of short bluegills, the reason why might surprise you!

There are some fantastic panfish lakes near Grand Rapids, Minnesota, thanks in part to careful management.

Some lakes, like the “Lake X” where this video was shot on an ice fishing trip last winter, have reduced bluegill/sunfish bag limits—five as opposed to the typical 20.

Why?

For starters, remove too many large male bluegills out of any lake and the bluegill population can “stunt.”

In this brass tacks video, Northern Minnesota guide and biologist Paul Nelson discusses this and more.
