Huge Spotted Bass On 4-Pound Line

Tennessee angler hooks spot-of-a-lifetime on a float ‘n fly rig.

While it’s no record-breaker, the spotted bass Richard Simms, of Scenic City Fishing Charters, recently caught shows how well the under-appreciated float ‘n fly rig performs on lethargic fish in cold water.

The rig consists of a lightweight hair jig, typically set seven to 12 feet below a small float, on light line, usually 4- to 8-pound test.

While the current world record spot weighed nearly 10½ pounds, a 4-pound fish is generally considered above average in weight. Based on the length and girth of Simms’ fish, it weighed roughly 7 pounds.
