Monster Perch Breaks South Dakota Record

Angler Chase Jensen’s jumbo yellow perch broke a 16-year-old state record.

South Dakota’s Game, Fish & Parks department recently confirmed that the 2-pound, 13-ounce yellow perch caught by angler Chase Jensen earlier this month is a new state record.

In March, the period anglers call “late-ice,” yellow perch typically enter the prespawn stage and increase feeding activity. This is often when the biggest fish of the year are caught.

Jensen’s jumbo came from Bitter Lake, near the town of Waubay, which also produced the previous state record—a 2-pound, 11-ounce fish—in 2004.
