Debbie and Richard Nubile of Tacoma, Washington, wanted to instill a love for the outdoors in their son Samuel, and began taking him fishing at an early age. They didn’t know that one of the photos they’d take during a trip to a local fishing pond would eventually earn a fabulous prize package from Abu Garcia and Berkley in NAF’s Awesome Fishing Photo Contest.
The shot of a grinning Samuel holding a good size rainbow trout was very special to him and his mom.
”Samuel was 9 or 10 at the time I took the photo,” says Debbie, “and this was the first really big fish he caught by himself.”
Crappies, perch and small trout were the types of fish upon which Samuel had cut his angling teeth, but when this rainbow took the worm suspended under his float, the youngster transformed from fishing kid to true angler.
It took him a good 10 minutes to land the trout,” remembers Debbie, “and a couple of times he asked his dad for help. Instead, we encouraged him to keep on going, and he was so proud when he finally brought the fish in on his own.”
Now, just six weeks away from his 16th birthday, Samuel’s love of fishing is still strong, according to his mother. “There are only two things he talks about these days—fishing and basketball,” she says. “And he’s constantly trying to figure out how and when he can get to the water next.”
Not only is the young man passionate about sportfishing, he enjoys passing along what he’s learned. Samuel’s aim this summer, says Debbie, is to teach younger kids how to rig tackle, tie knots, cast and handle fish as a volunteer instructor at his local park district.

”He has a personal goal, too,” she adds, “and that’s to focus more energy on bass fishing this summer. Mike Iaconelli has become his idol.”
For submitting the winning photo, Debbie will receive a Berkley E-Motion baitcasting rod, an Abu Garcia Revo STX reel, and a selection of Berkley Havoc softbaits—a prize package valued at more than $300.
”I will be giving the rod, reel and lures to Samuel as a birthday present in June,” says Debbie, “so the timing is just perfect.”
