Hogfish 101

This is one beautifully ugly fish.

Have you ever hogfished? This colorful misshapen member of the wrasse family has a face only a mother could love, but meat that most every angler will love. They use their long snout to dig for crustaceans, and that rooting behavior gave them their name.

These reef-dwellers resemble a snapper and deliver all the fight, as Captain Jason Stock and NAF host Tyler Kapela are finding out. They offer an overview on where to find them, how to boat them and the best gear to use.

The next time you're fishing Florida or the Gulf of Mexico you'll want to keep the hogfish in mind. The action is great, and the reward at the end of the day is a meal fit for a king.
