Silent Invaders: Ballast Water

Sometimes Mother Nature provides simple answers to complex problems.

The ballast water from ocean-going ships is a factor in spreading invasive species that was overlooked for years. This culprit has been instrumental in carrying invasives from other continents, and damage caused has been devastating to the Great Lakes over time.

The good news is regulations that require ships to exchange that water offshore to allow the saltwater to act as a natural biocide for those organisms.
