Explore Canada: Saskatchewan

There are so many great options to choose from when picking the right location for your next trip to Canada. This time, we explore why Saskatchewan is a top choice for outdoor enthusiasts!

Located at Canada’s center, above Montana and North Dakota lies the famous Saskatchewan. Quite literally the countries bread basket, this region produces some of the finest wildlife in terms of sheer numbers and sizes in the world. No exception to that rule are the huge whitetail deer that populate the area. As a matter of fact, Saskatchewan is home to the World-Record Whitetail “Hanson Buck” harvested in 1993 near Biggar, Saskatchewan. The Great Plains of Saskatchewan are also home to some of the best waterfowl hunting anywhere. The millions of geese and immense duck populations that inhabit the region attract waterfowl hunters from all over the world. Also, Upland game bird hunting for pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse and Hungarian partridge is also excellent throughout Saskatchewan.

In addition to game birds, visiting big game enthusiasts can also enjoy hunting whitetail deer, moose and black bear throughout the area's diverse landscape. The hunting of antelope, mule deer and elk, however, is restricted to Saskatchewan residents only.

As if the world class hunting wasn't enough to get your gears turning, north of the Plain lands lies a wildly vast region primarily made of Canadian Shield. This area in particular is home to some of the world’s best walleye, northern pike and lake trout fishing. Saskatchewan’s popularity as a world-class fishing destination can be attributed to its massive areas of unspoiled, natural beauty, as well as its huge selection of close to 100,000 lakes and rivers. Covering almost 1/3 of the province, Saskatchewan contains more freshwater the British Columbia and Alberta combined!

Many of the top fishing lodges of Saskatchewan are located in the northern half of the province on huge lakes like Athabasca – the fourth largest lake in Canada. A few others with equally great fishing reputations include Cree, Reindeer, Wollaston, Hatchet, La Ronge, and the ever present Churchill River. Keep in mind...This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to world-class fisheries in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan is the Land of the living Skies. Trust us, every ounce of planning that goes into a trip to this province is worth the effort.
