I flew in on Monday, after the opening weekend, and the Florida opener for me was really slow. I am hunting in Arcadia Florida with good friend and outfitter, David Mills, owner of Ruttn, Struttin and Reelin. Coltin Mills, David's son and number one guide, took me to a property of about 300 acres, mostly Palmettos.
We walked through two oak hammocks and ended up in an open field. This was a great place to start. I popped up my Double Bull blind and set out my hen decoy at a vantage point that over looked most of the field. This is the set-up I like for an area I've never hunted. The open area will let us see turkey movement and will put the decoy in view of most of the field. We listened for gobbles as the sky started to lighten. It was quiet. We heard no gobbles.
We sat the rest of the morning sporadically calling but got no responses.
At noon we took a break and when we returned Coltin and I scouted out the rest of the property. We located another open area on the opposite side of the property. It wasn't as big as this morning's field.
We sat utill dark but saw or heard no wild turkeys. On the way out we passed through a third open area. It looked good and I wanted to try it in the morning.
