His Recruiting Story:
As a sophomore, Murphy was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection after rushing for 846 yards. He had schools begin to contact him and he made noise on the camp circuit, but it wasn't until after his junior season, one in which he rushed for nearly 1,600 yards and 20 touchdowns, that the offers came. Illinois and Iowa were the first two. Mississippi State would follow with Purdue and Iowa State coming after the Bulldogs. Kansas State would offer in the spring, but Murphy would commit to Mississippi State after attending their camp in July.
"I like the people there. I like the environment. I have a lot of family and friends there. It's comfortable there. I try not to let it factor in my recruitment but it's a part of what I like about it."
Murphy is a good sized back who has shown he can break arm tackles and that he has the speed to break long runs at the high school level. He is a one-cut and go type back and does not waste a lot of time going laterally or dancing in the backfield. Where he can improve is still to become more elusive and also running behind his pads more. He's a big, strong kid, but runs tall and improving pad level would maximize his physical attributes.
Murphy has a nice package of physical tools, particularly his size and speed at that size. He will have to adjust to the new level of competition in college, but there is a lot to work with here.
