Proper Prep For Predators

We know how hard it is not being in the woods every day of the season. Been there, done that. But if you’re stuck at home babysitting the mother-in-law, it might not be a bad idea to get your predator pack ready.

I'm getting fidgety waiting for the coyotes around here to turn prime. I know they aren't there yet because a friend shot one recently and I helped him skin it out and prepare it for market. Judging by that one sample, it'll be at least 2 more weeks before fur hunting can start in earnest.

To keep from going crazy while I wait, I've spent some time getting my backpack and the gear I carry in it ready for the season.

Terrain, species pursued, hunting style, personal preference and a dozen other things influence what a hunter carries in a pack; however, I thought I'd share the list of what's carried in mine when I'm predator hunting.

Here it is, broken down into three categories:

    Hunting
  • E-caller
  • Bipod or tripod
  • Padded seat
  • Decoy (seasonal)

    Skinning
  • Heavy drag rope
  • Two light ropes
  • Tick and lice killer spray
  • Vinyl/latex gloves
  • Two skinning knives
  • Tail stripper
  • Garbage bags
  • Knife sharpener
  • Folding saw
  • Headlamp

    Survival
  • Granola bars
  • Fire starter kit
  • Compass
  • First aid supplies
  • Toilet paper
  • Emergency blanket

Looking at the above list, it's obvious much of what I carry in a pack is for skinning purposes. And although it's not specifically mentioned, the pack is also where the hides I harvest go when I'm either walking back to the truck or hoofing it to the next stand. If I didn't field skin my coyotes, I likely wouldn't need to carry a backpack at all.

But it's important to note that not everything is carried in that pack. I use a hunting vest to carry some gear as well. It contains things such as a camera, rangefinder, extra game calls, cell phone, licenses and more ammo.

Combined, it's a system I've refined over many years that works for me. If you don't have a backpack equipped for predator hunting, feel free to use this list as a starting point and use the forum link below to let me know what you put in yours that I don’t have in mine.
