Larry Weishuhn and the Drop Tine Buck

Larry came across this beautiful whitetail buck with a massive drop tine while hunting Oklahoma.

Legendary hunter and wildlife biologist Larry Weishuhn was on a whitetail hunt in Oklahoma when out of nowhere a beautiful buck with a curly 8 to 9-inch drop tine comes into shooting range. Unfortunately for Larry he promised the outfitter that he would only shoot a deer that was five or six years old, and this unique buck was only 3 1/2.

No one knows for certain what causes drop tines in deer. Some bucks will have them one season and not the following one, while others will have them their entire life. Genetics probably play a role in this, but to what extent isn't known. An injury when a buck's antlers are still in the velvet stage can also cause drop tines.

In any case, this buck's rack is an excellent example of how sometimes a mutation can be a beautiful thing!
