Part 3 of outdoor writer Gayne C. Young's trip to Ox Ranch

Along the way we encountered fleeting mouflon and a lone black buck and a flock of female ostrich drinking but no big males.

Forgive this recording but I’m on my way to an aoudad hunt in West Texas and Motel 6 doesn’t have the best acoustics.

Anyway…

The ostrich we first went after wasn’t quite the rooster we were looking for so we headed further into the ranch in search of a big male.

Along the way we encountered fleeting mouflon and a lone black buck and a flock of female ostrich drinking but no big males.

We then spotted a South American rhea with a busted wing.

I grabbed my shotgun and some shells…

What?

Yeah…

I used turkey load…

Cuz Remington doesn’t make rhea load is why!

My rhea stood 5 foot tall and weighed just under 50 pounds.

Still, his ostrich cousin will weigh twice as much…

If I can find one!
