My guide Darren Carr and I skirted to the top of a cliff and peered into the valley below to spot a herd of 25 aoudad feeding. All were male and carried nice horns but it was the leader of the group that was most impressive. Darren set up some shooting sticks behind a stand of yucca and we waited for a clean shot. That wait turned out to be 45 minutes and involved a lot of sweat considering that even at 6:30 it was still in the triple digits.
The old patriarch dropped to a 130 yard shot at a 30-degree angle. His horns measured 31 ½ inches in length and carried bases of 13 3/8 inches. At close to 300 pounds he was a brute and at 8 ½ years old almost at the end of his road.
My thanks to Darren and all the staff at Indianhead Ranch.
